What is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred, evidence-based approach that aims to improve an individual’s quality of life while reducing behaviours of concern. Rather than asking “How do we stop this behaviour?”, PBS asks “Why is this behaviour happening, and how can we support the person better?”
Every behaviour communicates something. It may be a way of expressing pain, anxiety, frustration, sensory needs, or an unmet need when communication is difficult. PBS focuses on understanding these reasons and teaching meaningful alternatives instead of relying on punishment or restrictive practices.
Why is Positive Behaviour Support Important?
People may display behaviours that challenge because they are trying to communicate a need that has not been met. When we understand the reason behind the behaviour, we can make changes that reduce stress, improve wellbeing, and promote independence.
Ultimately, PBS is about helping people live the life they want—not simply changing behaviour.
The primary aim of PBS is not simply to reduce challenging behaviour but to improve overall quality of life of an individual. This means supporting individual to develop independence, build meaningful relationships, participate in their communities, and achieve their personal goals. PBS promotes dignity, respect, inclusion and choice by ensuring that every individual receives support tailored to their strengths, preferences and aspirations. When people feel understood, valued and supported, they are more likely to experience positive outcomes in all aspects of their lives.
Positive Behaviour Support in Everyday Practice
PBS is not a document that sits on a shelf—it is something that happens every day through positive interactions.
The UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends PBS as the primary framework for supporting people with learning disabilities whose behaviour challenges. NICE states that interventions should focus on understanding the function of behaviour, adapting environments, teaching new skills, and improving overall wellbeing rather than relying on restrictive or reactive approaches.
A Better Future Through Positive Behaviour Support
Positive Behaviour Support is far more than behaviour management. It is about seeing the person before the behaviour. It is a philosophy of care, that recognizes the importance of understanding people, respect individuality and creating opportunities for success.
By focusing on strengths rather than limitations, PBS empowers individuals to develop new skills, build meaningful relationships, and live fulfilling lives with dignity and independence. Every positive interaction, every supportive conversation, and every opportunity to learn contributes to a brighter future.
Whether in supported living, education, healthcare, or the community, PBS provides a framework for building respectful relationships, fostering independence, and improving lives—one positive interaction at a time.
